Picture Naming Task¶
HED Task ID: hedtsk_picture_naming
Also known as: Object Naming, Confrontation Naming
Naming of pictured objects; RT and errors index lexical retrieval and are sensitive to name agreement, frequency, and age of acquisition.
Description¶
Participants view photographs or line drawings of common objects, animals, or scenes and name each item aloud as quickly and accurately as possible. Naming latency (RT from stimulus onset to vocal response onset) is the primary measure. The task engages multiple stages of language production: conceptual identification, lemma retrieval, phonological encoding, and articulation. fMRI reveals activation in left inferior frontal regions (Broca’s area) and temporal cortex. The task is widely used in aphasia research and studies of language production.
Inclusion test¶
Procedure |
Line drawings or photographs of objects are presented one at a time; participants name each object as quickly as possible. |
Manipulation |
Object frequency; name agreement; visual complexity; phonological or semantic context (blocked naming, picture-word interference). |
Measurement |
Naming latency; error type (semantic, phonological); frequency and agreement effects. |
Variations¶
Variation |
Description |
Justification |
|---|---|---|
Standard Single-Object Naming |
Name isolated objects as quickly as possible. |
Canonical overt naming to pictured objects |
Blocked-Cyclic Naming |
Small sets named repeatedly in semantically homogeneous vs. heterogeneous blocks; measures semantic interference. |
Same items repeat in blocked cycles; cumulative interference paradigm |
Continuous Naming |
Large sets with cumulative semantic interference across ordinal position within a category. |
Rapid successive naming; tests sustained lexical access |
Picture-Word Interference (PWI) |
Simultaneous distractor word during naming; semantic vs. phonological distractors. |
Distractor word accompanies picture; lexical competition paradigm |
Delayed Naming |
See picture → delay → name; separates conceptual/lexical from articulatory processes. |
Delay between picture onset and response signal; isolates planning from execution |
Object + Action Naming |
Naming objects, actions, and attributes in separate or mixed blocks. |
Name actions as well as objects; different grammatical category |
Bilingual Picture Naming |
Language switching paradigms with mixed-language naming blocks. |
Language cue specifies response language; language control demand |
Tip-of-the-Tongue (TOT) Paradigm |
Inducing retrieval failures via low-frequency items. |
Naming under word-finding difficulty conditions; different metacognitive state |
Naming with Phonological/Semantic Cues |
Providing partial information to study facilitation. |
Partial cues provided after TOT; different cueing structure |
